NAAAHR- Birmingham
Chapter Awards Ramsay High School Essay Contest Winners
Dressing for success, showing up on time, faith in
God and teamwork were just a few of the qualities Ramsay
High School students identified as being most important
to future employers. This was good news to members
of Birmingham’s National Association of African
Americans in Human Resources chapter. Melva Tate,
Past President/Sr. Advisor, spoke to contest winners
and Ramsay’s Future Business Leaders of America
(FBLA) members during the award ceremony. We
chose the contest title “Steps I Can Take to Make
Myself the Employee of Choice”, to discover what
our future leaders considered valuable traits for employers. Tate
encouraged students to take advantage of every opportunity,
to never stop learning and to develop their circle of
support by building a team of mentors and a strong network.
Mark Johnson, chapter board member and contest sponsor,
stressed the importance of making every action and decision
count towards the future. Johnson said his transition
from corporate America to business owner of Creative
Benefit Solutions, would not have been possible if he
had not made good decisions early in his career. He
also advised students to never look down on a person
unless they were extending a hand to lift the person
up.
Karzetta Bester, Jacqueline Nixon and other Ramsay High
School teachers were praised for promoting the essay
contest and for their positive words of inspiration expressed
in the letters of recommendation for their students.
